Digital Tools for Teacher-Directed Instruction

Page history last edited by Lucas Gillispie 7 years, 9 months ago

There are so many tools available to support focused (teacher-directed) instruction.  Try different tools to see what's most engaging for your students.  Of course, online/web-based alternatives allow you to keep a cloud-based archive of your instructional materials and presentation resources that can often be accessed by you and your students from anywhere there's an internet connection.

Presentation Tools (alternatives to PowerPoint):

Google Slides

Prezi

Haiku Deck (not related to Haiku LMS)

Emaze

Flipped Classrooms

Flipping the classroom is an instructional strategy in which the instructor creates instructional video students access from outside the classroom.  Essentially, these videos replace traditional homework activities.  The hands-on/practice, then, becomes a larger part of what takes place in the classroom.

How This Connects to SAMR

Sometimes, focused instruction is the best approach for portions of your lesson (part of the 20%).  Most of the ideas and resources here, depending on how they're used, are likely to fall under Substitution in SAMR.  Often, Modification and Redefinition require a higher degree of interactivity, collaboration, and/or creativity and will be addressed in the Collaborative and Independent Learning portions of your lesson or unit (part of the 80%).  That certainly doesn't mean that focused instruction can't be engaging for learners!  Sometimes it's simply a matter of dusting off those old PowerPoints, refreshing and updating your content, finding ways to connect to real life and areas of relevance to your students.  Trying out a new presentation tool can help, too.  For something visually different from PowerPoint, try Haiku Deck or Emaze.  If you want to move up to the Augmentation level, with more interactive focused instruction, a presentation tool like Nearpod can add interactivity to an otherwise dry lecture.  Likewise, there are a wealth of interactive, quick, formative assessment tools that could be embedded directly in your focused instruction.  Kahoot and Quizizz are perfect examples.

In addition, video is easier to create than ever!  Consider using a flipped classroom strategy to free up time for more collaborative and creative projects.  Google Hangouts on Air are a quick and easy way to do this, and you can easily build a collection of teacher-directed resources in a YouTube playlist.
